Stage Confidence Lessons

Today I taught and learned one of the best dance lessons I can.

Yesterday and today I taught a two day dance class with the middle school kids. We had a blast as we danced to songs from Broadway musicals, talked about Julie Andrews & Dick Van Dyke, and learned to have fun with dance.

Last night, I found this quote: "It takes an athlete to dance, but an artist to be a dancer." ~ Shanna LeFleur

Hmm...I thought, I want to teach them that tomorrow. As I got ready for bed, I remembered I wanted to bring in some scarves for dancing with so I rounded them up. About halfway into class today, I pulled them out and had everyone pick one. Then I told them about this quote.

Every one of them did sports, gymnastics, dance, or some sort of athletic activity. I then asked how many considered themselves to be an artist. Only a few raised their hands. I reminded them to have confident in their abilities as an artist. Whether they were good at drawing or dancing or sports or a hobby, they had to give it everything.

That's when the scarves came in to play. I put on "Let's Go Fly a Kite" from Mary Poppins. Their mission? To go from one side to the other. Their own way. So one at a time they danced their way across. Some gave it their all with leaps and twirls. Some needed encouragement to just simply walk across. The next time around the bold relaxed and just enjoyed themselves, and the timid began to understand. We tried it one more time and everyone just went across with everything they had, including a grin. 😊

It was a great lesson for boosting stage confidence, in what they enjoy doing, and in themselves. All in all, it resonated with me. I'm going to keep that little lesson in my files for future dance teaching times.

March Musings - Day 15

They taught me a lesson in monopoly. I was home from work as we never opened due to the snowstorm, so we played Wizard of Oz monopoly simplified. L-Jo and T-Bug played the first round. Surprisingly, T-bug won! Her strategy was to buy only the properties she had her heart's desire for, and when all was said and done, she had the most cash, so we deemed her the winner! (It's easier to do it that way!)

The second time it was with T-Tot, and Lil' G. Lil' G won because she did an almost identical strategy to T-bug, and ended up with twice as much money as T-bug! ($2057!)

All in all, I have a new strategy for the next time I play monopoly.... We shall see if it works! Also, a cup of coffee with it helps. ;~)

Just remember, if you are playing monopoly, your cat will want some dominion as well in this. I call this photo: "Surveying his monopoly...."

On Butterflies and Caterpillars (a guest post)

{Melissa M.}

Caterpillars. All they do is crawl around on the ground and eat. It takes forever for them to get anywhere.

Butterflies. Transformed, new, free. They can flutter above things, dancing in the air, not having to plod around on the ground.

My mom told me a bit about how God was teaching her about a particular butterfly. As she was sitting on a rock one morning, her attention was directed to a bright, yellow butterfly. She saw it easily flutter over a fence, dancing in the air without any cares. She thought about caterpillars, and how they can only crawl along on the ground, and how it would take such a very long time for a caterpillar to scale a fence! When living in defeat, we can be like that caterpillar, just plodding along through the trials, but God has a better way.

One day recently my Grandpa fell. He’s done that twice recently, and one of the times he had to go to the hospital. I was sitting out on our front porch swing when I lifted my eyes and saw that same beautiful butterfly hanging around by my cousin’s tree. I was reminded that it’s possible to soar even above the harder trials.

Just this week, the butterfly again fluttered over our family’s camping trailer. We’re getting ready to go on a trip, and the butterfly was once again a reminder that we can soar with Jesus above any trials that may come during it.

The Holy Spirit is able to help us soar even when things really hurt. If we let Him, He can show us things we’ve never dreamed possible and help us to be more like Christ, even in the middle of it all. And in the end, He’ll make all things beautiful.

“He has made everything beautiful in His time…” Ecclesiastes 3:11

“God works all things out for good, to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

---------------------------------------

My name is Melissa Morgan, and I am a 15 year old Christian who loves writing, praying, and being with those who love Jesus. I enjoy talking about what God is doing, getting to know people better, and hearing whatever God has to say. I also love dancing and singing, and spending good quality time with friends and family.

Homeschooling - You're Doing it Wrong? (a guest post)

The best part about my years as a child would be the years I was homeschooled, hands down. To be precise, that was about 9 years of my life.

Being homeschooled enabled me to earn a Black Belt at 12 years old, play in my band's first professional gig a few months later, start college at 16, graduate high school with two Associate Degrees, and earn my Bachelor's Degree at 21. It enabled my brother to start college at 13 years old and saw him become Chapman University's youngest alumnus at 17 years old.

Nevertheless, there is a herd of people out there who think homeschooling is the absolute worst thing one can do for their child. Here are just five things they say is wrong with us, followed by a real homeschooler's response.

1. "You have no concept of pop culture."
Yeah, no thank you. We know all about your pop culture. Why do you think we were homeschooled in the first place? Keep your PokemonGO, Whip Whip Nae Nae, and Kardashians to yourself, please.

2. "You'll never be socialized."
Well, I'm guest-posting on someone else's blog, so checkmate on this one.

3. "You only complete the bare minimum so you can have a fake graduation."
This implies that homeschoolers aren't interested in anything else but getting their education over with. Funny, because the homeschoolers I know go above and beyond the "bare minimum" studies and they usually master something pretty awesome. How about the Cherryholmes? They are a homeschooled family that excelled in music and ended up with several Grammy nominations. I would call that "genius".  Ever hear of Atticus Shaffer? He's a big time actor who knows anything you ever wanted to know about American history, he can speak German, loves chess, and even works in film/documentary making. I've had the honor to meet him and keep in touch with him over the years, and I can assure you, his education and love for learning goes far beyond “the minimum”. I would call him "genius".  How about Arran Fernandez? He was homeschooled and went to college at 15. Just three years later, he became the youngest Senior Wrangler at Cambridge University. Senior Wrangler is the mathematics' term for "genius".

4. "What, do you wear pajamas all day, too?"
Actually, this sounds pretty comfy, but it's still unrealistic for homeschoolers. We are those people that get out and get things accomplished. Whether it's starting businesses (Andrew Carnegie), inventing soda water (Joseph Priestly), starting a country (literally all of our Founding Fathers), or winning Nobel Prizes (Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, Pearl S. Buck, Erwin Schrödinger and many more!), homeschoolers don't sit still!

5. “Doing school at home all day must be so dull and boring.”
One of my favorite college professors taught me a Latin phrase that goes like this: De gustibus non est disputandem.
For those of you who aren't yet fluent in Latin (get with the program!) this is the translation: There is no disputing about tastes. If you think living a life where you can learn with no limits, and become whatever you wish to make of yourself is dull and boring, I can't dispute that. However, I feel sorry for you. A homeschooler doesn't wait for someone to teach them something, they go and learn for themselves. That, my friends, is why homeschoolers are genuinely excited about learning. They wouldn't have it any other way. It’s an adventure to us. An exciting challenge. A thrill. These are not complete sentences…

Yes, I am THAT homeschooler. I've graduated, but still do intense research when something intrigues me. That's why you'll hear me talking about the practical effects used in theme park rides or movies I've never seen. That's why I'll visit ".org" sites to take official tests to see if I have synesthesia and then ask my friends if they have it too.  That's why I find politics and social media (separately and together) absolutely fascinating and horrifying. I google ASL lessons, yodel techniques, Gaelic pronunciations, Civil War history, and so much more on my free time.

Oh sure, you’ll find different kinds of homeschoolers everywhere you go. Not all of us make goat cheese, not all of us ride horses, not all of us play banjo. We’re just as diverse as you could imagine. What can I say? Homeschoolers are cool like that.

Learning in Belize - A Sequel to Learning in Ecuador (a guest post)

{by Heidi S.}

Last time Moriah asked me to be a guest on her blog, I gave her a journal entry of my time in Manta, Ecuador. This time, I thought I would share how God has been faithful in the past 2 years, and what he's doing with me here in San Pedro, Belize (Central America)

Two years ago, upon leaving Ecuador, I reflected on how God never left me. All through the trip he had his hand on everything. Upon leaving America for Belize, I see the same thing. He has been faithful every step of the way. I started a nanny job in November 2014. I never thought I would ever leave them. They had adorable children, and I told everyone that I planned on staying with them until the youngest children were old enough to go to school. And they were my plans. Clearly, God had a different path for me.

It was September 2015 that I really felt like God wanted me to do something else, to go somewhere else. I prayed about it, asked friends and family for advice, read the bible, and prayed more. In November, on my birthday, I announced to my family that I was taking this leap of faith and applying to be a Mission Nanny. I waited until after the holidays and in January of 2016 I was accepted to be a Mission Nanny.

Mission Nanny is an organization that sends a volunteer nanny to families that are working around the world in bringing others to Christ. Once I applied they had me pick 3 families that I had prayed about serving. My top three choices were Belize, Honduras and Uganda. Two weeks after giving my choices, I was told that the family in Belize was interested in having me come be their nanny.

I had a phone conversation with the mom here in Belize and felt even more peace about it. She asked me to come on board for their July-September quarter at a school they teach. A and I (mom and dad of the kids I nanny for) work on a campus for a school called YWAM. (Youth With A Mission) Here at YWAM, there are people from ages 18 to nearly 63. A and I, help in leading these people towards God in discipleship classes (Learning who God is and how we can love and serve him more)

Back to me in America. I had to go through the fire of telling the family I nannied for that I was leaving. I did that at the end of February and just like I prayed, they were okay with it and encouraged me to follow my goals and dreams. I was so thankful for their understanding. In May I left the family that were knit in my heart and began to prepare for Belize.

Something I prayed daily for was God to help me leave my family, friends and home. I asked that he give me people who would welcome me, that the children I would nanny for here in Belize would like me, that they wouldn't be spoiled.

And through each one of these, God has been faithful and blessed me better then I thought possible. While I had a few nerve-wracking adventures along the way of getting here (hey, everyone needs stories to share, right?) I got here safely. I have two beautiful roommates that I love talking to and whenever I need to share something, I can count on them to be listening ears. I have two children that, while they have their moments (what child doesn't?) are very happy little kids and are fairly content.

I've had some ups and downs within in the past month that I've been here. I've gotten sick twice (swollen lymph nodes, lack of energy) I've had a few mishaps with little F-girl who is in the process of being potty trained. J-boy doesn't always nap when he should. I'm an introvert, so I don't usually seek out fellowship as much as I could. I mess up. I make mistakes. I'm not perfect.

But God is. And I'm thankful for this beautiful, messed up life I've been given. Never once has he failed me and I know I can place my future in his hands. While I may not know where he has called me next after Belize (there's another hundred roads I could take at the end of September) He is faithful and will show me when the time is right.

“Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commandments.” Deut. 7:9

Learning in Ecuador

Today's guest post is from a friend that went on a mission's trip to Ecuador. My friend wrote this in her journal while she was there.

Monday, July 6, 2014

I can't believe I'm leaving Ecuador tomorrow. This has been one of the best trips ever. I love the children, the workers the people, but we have to leave tomorrow morning. Something I've learned from this trip is that God will provide, but in his time. I was super stressed out, thinking about me and N needing to get the money, then when A and K joined I got even more worried and with L on top of that, I just didn't know how we would ever get the money to go. Then I got worried that our planes wouldn't make it, we wouldn't be able to get in due to our passports not working, and all the other little things like making sure each and every one of our 17 suitcases got into Quito fine.

But God has sen us through it all. Even the language barrier, the feeling of being left out it was all fine. God worked it out and I had no reason to worry about anything at all. A has been the animation, K has been the laughter, and L, God bless you girlie, she's been the nurse who has helped each and every one of us girls who have gotten sick. God knew that I would need each and every girl on this trip, for the encouragement, the love, the joy and the friendship they have given me over the past seven days.

I'm glad I came. While I can see myself working at an orphanage like this one in the future, I know that God wants me home right now and I'm alright with that. All I need to do right now is trust him, knowing he is going to provide, but in his time and his way. All I need to do is pick up the rocks and let him do the rest....okay, so maybe I do need to keep up with him, letting him work in my life and not hardening it or turning away from him. God is good and enough, my all in everything I do. He's never going to leave me or forsake me, nor will he ever pretend to be someone he is not. God is good all the time and I can take comfort in that.

You know, before I left Sunday last week, I was having an emotional time. I wasn't eating well, I was nervous (of course) and worried and then people started giving us hugs telling us goodbye and that's when the tears came. Then during worship I just couldn't sing. But M, (love you girlie!) tossed me a note that said, “Hebrew 13:56 “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be contend with what you have because God has said, 'never will I leave you, never will I forsake you' so we say with confidence, 'The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?'”

God as never left me. He never turned his back on me, he's been right here, by my side, helping me even as I think I'm alone. It's such an encouragement especially as I feel a little left out, or alone, I can remind myself that God will never leave me. He's had his hand on me, on this trip, the whole time and I've seen him work through us girl, especially myself, through this trip. It's such a blessing and I'm really, really, really glad I came to Ecuador and didn't let my selfishness or sadness stop me from disobeying God.

34 days till X'mas

My sister (6) is trying to earn enough money to buy Christmas presents.

She is very excited to only have $1.50 left to earn.

I set up a bank for her, she is earning $7.56. She spent a $1.08 on present.

She is very excited with the prospect of buying presents.

She made herself a list with the person's name and the present she wants to get.

You can easily do this with your family.

My sister is having a blast. And she is learning about tax and a little math too.

What do you do kids that want to buy gifts for people?

Let me tell you about

Let me tell you about my day.*

Lets see, I got up and made Jesus breakfast, oatmeal.
Then I put Jesus' laundry in the washing machine.
Then I rocked Jesus to sleep.
I got Jesus a snack.
Then I put Jesus' laundry in the dryer.
Found some clean clothes for Him to wear.
Then I made Jesus lunch of peanut butter and fluff.
Then I helped my Mom put Jesus to bed for a nap.
After that Jesus helped me with my Algebra..........

Jesus said in Matthew 25:31-45

The Sheep and the Goats

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ Matthew 25:31-45

I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.

That is what Mother Teresa's outlook was.

My Mom and I recently read a couple books about her.

What an AMAZING woman after God's heart.

I thoroughly recommend reading about her.

So when I get mad at my sisters, I get mad at Jesus.
When I do the laundry, I am doing Jesus' laundry.
When I forgive one of my friends, I forgive Jesus.
When I chat with my friends at dance, I chat with Jesus.
When I dance, I dance for Jesus.
When I clean, I am cleaning Jesus' house.

This is the life I want to live.

I want to live for Jesus by serving him, by serving people.

I think this song sums it up: Good to be Alive

"I wanna live like there's no tomorrow
Love like I'm on borrowed time
It's good to be alive"

(Mom, I'm stealing your lesson from Chapel!! :~D)

What I needed to hear

I am taking a fast from email this week.

Which is hard, because that is how I access my blog, through email.

I do this every now and then. It really refreshes my outlook through God's word and how I see and chat with my friends.

Email is my form of communication. No Facebook, no cell phone, no texting, no Twitter.

I wanted to write a blog post.

Why, I have no clue.

I pulled up my email to access my blog.

And I saw I had a new blog entry to read from "A Holy Experience", written by the author of "One Thousand Gifts".

And I read it.

And her post talked about something I am dealing with.

PERFECTIONISM

I have a pendulum.

It swings one way: I AM IN PERFECTIONIST MODE
It swings another:   I AM IN WHO CARES MODE

I try to do one or the other. And I am never happy where I am. And then it struck me.

I am fine.

I help out around the house.

I help my Mom.

And then I think.....

:~D ....the rain is falling. But the Son is shining!

I had no clue what to write.

But now I do.

I am going to write my goals.

  1. Continue my skim through the Bible, reading about God's holy women.
  2. Straighten the library like I promised Mom.
  3. Start my French book. And do some math.
  4. Think of dinner, because its been a long day for Mom.
  5. Work on repairing an antique blanket.
  6. Take costumes to the dance studio.
  7. Work on my clothes of Compassion, Kindness, Humility, Gentleness, Patience, and Love. (Colossians 3:12&14)
  8. Have a tea party with my sisters.

I have nothing to worry about.

If my bed isn't perfectly made, the cat who was sleeping on it won't care, that is okay.
If my sisters aren't perfect, that is okay.
If my outfit isn't perfect, that is okay.
If my hair isn't perfect, that is okay.

HAVE A MARVELOUS RAINY DAY! THE SON IS SHINING!

Thoughtful Thursday: Mr. Rogers' Words of Wisdom

I love Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. It is an awesome kids show.

It ranks no. 1 on my list of kids programs (Barney comes second, Sesame street needs a magnify glass to see it on my list).

I recently read a couple books of his quotes, and a biography about him. Very interesting man. I didn't know he was a Christian!

This quote I copied and place it on my email signature...

When we love a person, we accept him or her exactly as is: the lovely with the unlovely, the strong along with the fearful, the true mixed in with the facade, and of course, the only way we can do it is by accepting ourselves that way.
~ Fred Rogers

It is SO true.

To love someone we need to be happy the way they were created, we are not to set out and find faults, but we are to set out and find the good in them.

Kind of on the same topic, I recently read something that said only 2% of women think they are beautiful. They don't accept that they were created unique and with a purpose. They don't accept the way that God created them.

Psalm 50:2
From Zion, perfect in beauty,
    God shines forth.

We are perfect in beauty in God's eyes.

NO ONE CAN CHANGE HIS MIND!

Good to Be Alive by Jason Gray

I heard this song on K-Love radio station, and adored it.

(Who knows what this is??)

When they had as the song of the week, I had to download it.

These are the lyrics:

Hold on
Is this really the life I'm living?
Cause I don't feel like I deserve it
Every day that I wake, every breath that I take you’ve given
So right here, right now
While the sun is shining down

I wanna live like there's no tomorrow
Love like I'm on borrowed time
It's good to be alive, yeah

Hold on
If the life that we've been given
Is made beautiful in the living
And the joy that we get brings joy to the heart of the giver
Then right here, right now
This is the song I'm singing out

I wanna live like there's no tomorrow
Love like I'm on borrowed time
It's good to be alive
[x2]

I won’t take it for granted
I won’t waste another second
All I want is to give you
A life well lived, to say “thank you”

I wanna live like there's no tomorrow
Love like I'm on borrowed time
It's good to be, it's good to be alive

I wanna live like there's no tomorrow
Love like I'm on borrowed time
It's good to be alive

I won’t take it for granted
I won’t waste another second
All I want is to give you
A life well lived, to say “thank you”

SO TRUE!

My Homage to Mr. Rogers of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

"For Fred, perhaps the earliest prototype of a true .neighbor. took the form of an elderly woman who lived in his hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania. She was his grandmother.s age, and everyone called her Mama Bell. Many times five-year-old Freddy (as he was called) would amble up her back-porch steps looking for a snack. He would arrive strategically on her back doorstep because it led straight to her kitchen, where she often made him his favorite treat.toast sticks. .Come for toast sticks, Freddy?. she would ask. One day Mama Bell asked Freddy if he would like to make the toast sticks on his own. Imagine his delight at being able to master what seemed like a grown-up task, as well as his pride at being entrusted with Mama Bell.s specialty. He was prompted to put the bread in the toaster, allowed to slowly butter the toasted slice, and then top it off with a dollop of jam. Mama Bell even let him carefully cut the toast into four long sticks.
Very soon after that encounter, Mama Bell got sick and died. Many decades later, Fred wondered if somehow Mama Bell had known she was reaching toward heaven and wanted Freddy to have this experience as a comfort to him, as a reminder of their unique friendship. Even though she was gone, he could now make toast sticks on his own, and he would always think of Mama Bell as he made them. Toast sticks may seem like a simple legacy, but they had a profound effect upon a young boy."

Thoughtful Thursday: Stars

I am studying Astronomy, the first quarter of school. And every time I read, or watch something about stars and outer space, I am in awe.

Psalm 148:3-4

Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.
 Praise him, you highest heavens
and you waters above the skies.

Awe of what OUR God, the ONLY God can make.

Psalm 33:6
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
their starry host by the breath of his mouth.

Planets in our solar system, each created uniquely, from
Jupiter's size to
Saturn's rings to
Mars' red socks to
Mercury so close to the sun,
and the rest, including dwarf, are equally fascinating.

Psalm 136:7-9
Who made the great lights—
His love endures forever.
8 the sun to govern the day,
His love endures forever.
9 the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.

The sun, a ball of gas, God strategically placed in the sky so we could live here.
It is our light during the day. "The greater light to govern the day." (Genesis 1:16)

The moon, an amazing rock, that glows at night. To "govern the night." (Genesis 1:16)

Psalm 8:3
When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place.

Stars so bright, you can see them from where we are.  "He also made the stars." (Genesis 1:16)

Psalm 147:4-5
He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name.

Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
    his understanding has no limit.

Galaxies, billions of miles away, but look through telescopes and see them like you can touch them.

Isaiah 40:26
Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:
    Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one
and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.

Say thank you to God for his "Starry host" that he created!

I said.....

.....I would be available....hahaha....

but I haven't.

I have been juggling many things.... including projects that should have been done months ago.

I have kept to my cleaning schedule pretty well.

My goals have been shaky.....not at all.....

My name is Moriah, which means "The LORD is my Teacher".

And it is also a mountain in the bible.

God HAS and IS my teacher these past few weeks. Helping my climb the mountains I have faced. Juggling school, cleaning and family, plus time for my self.

Climbing those mountains are hard.

I have been faced with stress, and I responed in the usual way.

Crying.

Feeling I haven't done a good job.

Feeling like a silly whiny person.

The stress would bog me down.

I couldn't focus on anything.

And I still have that problem.

God has seen me through that.

And I don't know what I would have done with out him.

Off to juggle....but not very well.

Sister

My baby sister was born today. Sweetest thing in the world. It dawned on me she is a person, not the one born before, but a NEW person! :~)

She is the sweetest thing.

Psalm 127:3
Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.

May my sister grow to Love, Listen, and Learn, from her heavenly Father, God!

I love you, sweet little sister!! :~)
